Cool Be Kind & Help a Total GW Newby...Please

I am very new to GW...and have been instantly enamored with the game. It addresses many of the issues I had with that other MMORPG game, and I decided to go ahead and get all three campaigns and the expansion. So, I have some very basic questions that I would like some help with...please.

1. Is there a way to share quests with members in your party...or does each person have to get the quest from the quest giver?

2. Is there a way to attack an enemy without mouse clicking? I know how to select enemies with Tab etc., but I cannot figure out how to initiate a basic ranged attack without clicking. In other words, I have to click on an enemy or use a special attack to begin attacking. Anybody?

3. Any other general general suggestions to help me get started?

Thanks and good fortune!

First, welcome! Now:
1. No, there is no way to share.

2. "C" selects the nearest enemy. Then hit the space bar to start attacking. But no, there is no auto-attack button I have in my setup or know about. The target must be selected before an attack/skill can be used.

3. Too many to mention...where did you start? Which game I mean. Then we can go from there.

If you have a quest that your party members do not have, they cannot receive the quest or the reward for completing it. However that doesnt mean they cant come along and complete the quest with you. For example if you have the quest "Kill Joe Blow Boss", another person without the quest or who has completed it already can come along and help you complete the quest and will be able to attack Joe Blow.

Katsumi is correct about the other 2 points.

Ok general opinions on Prophecies, you start in the beginner area called "Pre-searing". On your first character, have fun here, do all quests you get a hold of, try out all secondary professions to see what is most effective for you, and explore around.

Dont be in a rush to get your secondary profession as you can change the secondary, but not until much later in prophecies. When you have explored beyond the wall and are done with the area go to "Post-searing" (quest that says you cannot come back). After you go "Post-searing" you cannot come back to "Pre".

Also remember you have 4 .... or actually 8 character slots, feel free to play other professions too or remake characters if you dont like hair, face etc. before he gets too late in the game.

Also keep in mind, there is a level cap of 20. If you did not know that, dont let it freak you out too much. See it as all levels prior to lvl 20 is training, game starts at lvl 20.

Welcome to Guild Wars.
First, it's good you found this site. It will help. Check out the sections that relate to your profession. It will help out.

There is also an official wiki for GW. Although I would be careful rooting around in it. Because there are storyline spoilers there. But looking at game mechanics will not endanger that.

Official Guild Wars Wiki
This can be access ingame from the help screen. Default for this is

F10 key. Or if you want to find out about something in the chat window type:

/wiki (what you want to search for)no parenthesis
This will minimize the game and open you flavor of internet browsers. This can give you some info

And here are some links within the official wiki that may be of interest to you:

Professions
Armor
Salvaging
Identify
Weapons
List of Weapons
Upgrade components
List of weapon upgrades
Commands

And finally, since you started in the first chapter you are in the tutorial area is called Pre-sear(clicky,clicky).

Great you have the other 2 campaigns; Guild Wars:Factions(Continent of Cantha) and Guild Wars:Nightfall(Continent of Elona). They have all the core profession(6 professions available in Prophecies) and each 2 extra Professions which you can access since you own that chapter. But you can only create those extras one from that continent. They also have unique skills which you can't access til you travel to the respective chapter. And your character can travel to each of the continents(games) once you reach a certain point.
And Finally there is Guild wars: Eye of the North. Which is an expansion.

I hope this helps out. Just root around the wiki. Use the search function to find out any specifics. But like I said before you can stumble across spoilers of the storyline. And I only mention this because I'm not sure how you would feel about it if it happened. I wouldn't want to detract from your experience.

Here are the links to the wikis:
http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Main_Page -non official
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Main_Page -official
You cna also access the official wiki by pressing F10 default key or typing /help in the game chat.

Feel free to experiment with skills, it will help you get a better hang of the game.

If you start with prophecies be sure not to buy skills that you can obtain doing quests. See the wikis for a list of those skills.

EDIT: you can always pm me in game if you have a quick question IGN: Adriana Shaitan.

Welcome to Guild Wars!

Holding down the alt key while looking around will show you all of the non-hostiles names in the area (a good way to find the merchant, chest, etc.). You can then double click their name to travel to them without having to pathfind the whole way. Sometimes, especially in Prophecies, you will become "stuck" but it's still an easy way to go about getting to the general service NPC's.

Holding down the ctl key while looking around will show you all of the hostiles in the area, even beyond what you are able to see on the screen at the time or behind obstacles.

Those are a couple bits of information that were very helpful to me but that took a little while to come up with.

If you'd like to add me to your freinds list please feel free to do so -- I'll answer any questions that I can. My in game name is the same as my forum name -- Ayelet Feldspar.

If I'm not mistaken you can just press the space bar with a weapon equipped to auto-target the closest hostile. I have that option toggled off, but I believe that it does exist. If I'm not mistaken the auto-targetting was a huge row when it was first introduced.

Aye

Also a few more things in pre-searing, you will get dye drops (can be used to change colors on weapons and armors). HOLD THE DYES until you get to post-searing. If you sell them to the merchant in pre, it will go for 25g, if you wait until post, they sell for much more. If you get Black or White dyes and someone wants to buy these dyes from you for 1000g, dont. They actually go for 6k for black and about 3k for white.

Also, dont dye your armor in presearing, you'll dump it once you get to post-searing.

Welcome aboard. Some good advice so far.

There is no way to 'share' quests, but you can have people come along and help you complete quests you have. They won't have the quest markers and so on so you'll have to direct which way to go, but they can help you finish the quest. However, they will not get any kind of quest reward unless they too have the quest in their log.

Sometimes if you're in range of an enemy you can use an attack skill or spell and it will target the closest enemy, however you won't really be 'attacking' in the sense that once you complete that action you'll still be standing there not doing anything, and your heroes/henchies will still be doing their own thing. (they tend to attack whoever you're attacking) Far better to choose who you want to attack, since you'll want to take out the monks and healers first.

Find a guild! Lots of guilds recruit in presearing so join one. If that doesn't work out, they're not helpful, you don't like them, whatever, leave them and join another. Eventually you'll find a good fit. Most people have been in a lot more than 1 guild, because chances are the first guild you join will not be right for you. A good guild will answer your questions, help you with quests, and do fun stuff with you.

If you get any materials in pre searing you might want to hold onto them (if you can afford a few invo slots ofc). They are used to create armour and weapons. If you at all find an ecto (lol), they sell for around 5k (the most expensive mats in the game).

When I first started playing GW I was all confused and thought, 'What a crap game!', but then I found out that if you stick with it and work through it, then you will feel a totaly new way about the game. I have been playing on the first day it came out in store (in HMV in East Kilbride Shopping Centre for me lol) and now I look back and can't imagine how I didn't realise what I was doing.

When GW2 comes out everyone will start to level out so you won't be the only one not knowing what you are doing.

Saving materials from pre isn't worth it. The only thing I would bring from pre is the spider webs. You can use an expert salvage kit and get silk. You will be able to salvage plenty of material once you get to post.

Most of the dye's are reasonably priced, but the black and white it very expensive. If you get either of those, keep them.

[some spoiler but...]

I don't want to advise you to rush into the game. But when you get into post-searing, i suggest that you do your best to make it to Lion's Arch AQAP (without skipping the quests and missions before that town).

Im sure that by the time your reach LA, you are already Level 10 or higher. It means that you can already access your expansion chapter (GW:EN). It may be a littel difficult to go to GW:EN at low level using the Henchmen but you will be able to get it in a few tries (without help from other people.)

The reason why I suggest that you go to GWEN is that you may be able to get help from 2 level 20 heroes named Ogden and Vexx. You can get both of them by just running to the exit of that cave.

Having heroes early will make your game "more enjoyable." After you get them, go back to LA and continue with the Prophecies missions and quests.

You are allowed to have 3 Heroes at a given time, but you can have more heroes (about 2-3 heroes for each character, like 3 monks, 3 necro, etc...). If you wish to get additional Hero, you may want to visit Nightfall and Faction (both are accessible from Lion's Arch). You will be able to get Kosh (a level 15 warrior) very early in Nightfall.

So, with that few actions (won't take an hour i think), you have a 4-man team composed of you (a Ranger, right?) and a Level 20 Monk, a Level 20 Elementalist and a Level 15 Warrior (he will level up with you also).

With that team, you will be able to play the game with more fun compared to those who started the game only with Prophecies.

Have fun.

didnt read the whole thread its to late. But you can attack without having selected a target, dont belive me go outside and try it. Though when you do it simply uses the skill/wands the nearest opponent.
